Starting over. Again.

It’s hard to know where to begin.

A good blog is focused with a single overriding theme. If it’s a personal blog without a single theme, isn’t it pretty much an censored online diary? When I first started this blog it was about my unemployment, job search, and the thing that helped me get through it – baking bread. When your job search is going nowhere, it’s nice to achieve something (anything) and make something with your own hands. The flattery was pretty great too. But things have since changed. On the job front, I started my freelance grant writing business. I’ve had a few clients, but starting a business from your home is no easy task. I still work part time in my dad’s office to help pay bills while I get this thing off the ground, but hopefully that won’t be for too much longer. Food wise, about a year and a half ago I realized I was lactose intolerant. As a result, I eat mostly vegan. It’s not so bad really. I still bake quite a bit. Bread is vegan so that hasn’t changed, but I learned so much about food, how to combine flavors, and the science behind it. The majority of my cupcakes and other dishes you really can’t tell the difference, even when I make mashed potatoes with Earth Balance and almond milk. It’s a great feeling really – making something so good that people can’t tell that it’s made with traditional ingredients. Although, if I may diverge here for a moment, baking this way is sometimes referred to as WWII baking. With only so much milk and eggs available, they learned how to bake without. For you “real” vegans – yes I know that sugars and such are not necessarily vegan, but let is just assume that all of these ingredients are organic and fair trade certified.

So what is my theme and why am I doing this? Two words: No Idea. But the most important thing is that I write. Not everyday, but almost every day. When I’m lacking inspiration I will most likely be reviewing TED Talks. If I make a really good dish or am trying a new DIY beauty something, I’ll probably mention it. Some goes for current events. As a result, this will invariably start start as a online diary of sorts. What I am hoping is that, in addition to writing better, I will find my own voice. Although, disclaimer on the writing thing – grant writing and blogging are two very different animals. Yes they both have words and they both tell stories, but that is about all the two have in common. I think of it like a black bear and a polar bear; they are both bears and they would both make me dinner if given the chance.

If you read this, I hope you’ll let me know. It’s always nice to know that there are people out there sharing in your thoughts. If not, well that’s okay too.
